Eddie Would Go...

WAIMEA BAY, Oahu/Hawaii (Tuesday, December 8, 2009) – After 25 years with most of those spent waiting, Waimea Bay delivered an event of legendary proportions today at the Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau, Fueled by Monster Energy. It was 25 years to the day since the first "Eddie" was held and waves of up to 50 feet poured in to Oahu’s North Shore as if on cue. With younger brother Clyde still in the lineup, at age 60, joined by the contemporary top guns of big wave riding, a packed arena celebrated every gutsy ride in brilliant sunshine befitting of a tribute to local hero Eddie Aikau.

Yeah, the kids and I braved the odds and drove up to the North Shore for some spectacular surfing at this amazing event.  I am still reeling from the exhilaration of watching man take on Mother Nature.  Eddie Aikau is a legend of epic proportions here in Hawaii.  Google him.  Anyway, every year there is a surfing event in his honor, with only days notice to invitees, that the show may be on.  "The Eddie" only runs if wave heights are going to be 30-40' and the last Eddie to run was in 2004.  I got tons of pictures and the kids were fantastic.  Since the news claimed there was traffic, we parked at the Banzai Pipeline and walked the rest of the way over to Waimea (about 2.5 miles).  I carried Lainie on my back there, but they both walked back to the car.  Troopers!  We only wish Steve could have been with us.  Check out the pics on the slideshow in the upper left corner, I got a couple hundred, but scaled it back to some of the better ones and my faves of the kids...For awesome event photos go to: http://live.quiksilver.com/2009/eddie/photos.php?btn_photos=_over

Fantastic pictures Monica! I liked the surfing, but I think I liked the pictures of the kids better. I also love that Jake has your blond hair in comparison to his dark haired sisters.
